“To those whom my life may touch in slight measure,
May I give graciously Of what is mine”

-The Delta Zeta Creed

Philanthropy means generosity - giving through service to help others.

Delta Zeta’s national focus on philanthropy supports Better Speech and Hearing and The Painted Turtle Camp. We also support Gallaudet University, House Ear Institute, The Starkey Hearing Foundation and the Sound Beginnings Program.

About Our Philanthropies

  • The Painted Turtle Camp is the only multi-disease medical camp of its kind on the west coast. Its mission is to provide a year-round, life-changing environment for children with chronic and life-threatening illness.
  • Gallaudet University is located in Washington, DC and has been a philanthropic partner of Delta Zeta since 1954. It is the World’s only university with undergraduate programs accessible to deaf and “hard of hearing” students. At Gallaudet University, Delta Zeta endowed the Delta Zeta Scholarship Fund and the Fine Arts Endowment Fund. There is also a collegiate Delta Zeta chapter, Omicron Sigma, at the university.
  • The House Ear Institute is located in Los Angeles, CA. Donations provide funds for research and clinical services in the Children’s Auditory and Research Center. Since becoming partners, Delta Zeta has raised over half a million dollars in funds for research and clinical services in the Children’s Auditory and Research Center.
  • The Starkey Hearing Foundation partnership was announced in 2006 at our National Convention. There are 20,000 hearing aids delivered annually to deaf and “hard of hearing” individuals in the US with limited financial resources. This is done through the Hear Now program, which collects hearing aids for recycling purposes.
  • The Sound Beginnings Program is Delta Zeta’s national philanthropic project. Its goal is to educate parents on the importance of follow-up activities if their infant does not pass the newborn hearing screening.
  • Lambda Xi’s local philanthropy is the Houston Ear Research Foundation. The foundation is a center that provides service dedicated to the cochlear implant.

Our main philanthropy event is Run to the Chicken.  It is a 5K race and all proceeds go to our philanthropies.  To find out more, check out www.runtothechicken.com.

Run to the Chicken

Run to the Chicken is a 5k "fun run" put on by Delta Zeta to benefit our local philanthropic partner, the Houston Ear Research Foundation.

The Houston Ear Research Foundation was founded in 1983 to provide service dedicated to the cochlear implant.  The cochlear implant is a procedure that helps those with hearing disabilities so severe they cannot receive assistance from the use of hearing aid.  Benefits of the implant include increased awareness of environmental sound, improved speech recognition and production and enhanced lip-reading abilities, all of which contribute to better communication skills.  Children as young as 12 months are able to have the implants, and since its opening the Houston Ear Research Foundation has performed the procedure for approximately 1000 patients.  The foundation not only performs the cochlear surgery, they also provide programming of the implant device, troubleshooting and maintenance follow-up testing.  If you would like more information, check out their website at www.houstoncochlear.org.

Run to the Chicken will be held on October 11, 2008 at 8am and begins (and ends) at the Dixie Chicken on Northgate. For information about registering or making a donation, please take some time to look at our website www.runtothechicken.com.

We're so excited and hope you see YOU on the back porch of the Chicken!
